What to Look for When Buying Kitchen Knives

If you have the knack for cooking scrumptuous dishes, then you should know that no pantry is complete without a set of high-quality blades, which are used for different purposes. Now, if what you have at home are rusty and dull, then it is about time you throw them out and buy new ones. To help you select the right types of knives for paring, carving, slicing, boning, filleting, and others, check out the tips below.

  • Be sure that the blades you purchase are made of steel. There are those made of ceramics, which are more affordable, but they cannot be sharpened. Thus, they will only be useless over time. Also, make sure that the cutting utensils come with full tangs when you buy them, and these should run the full length of the handle and must be visible as a metal line.
  • Choose between stamped and forged slicing parts. The former is made by mechanically cutting out of a steel sheet, while the latter is done by a human. But, of the two, the second one is more preferred by most experienced chefs.
  • Check important components of various types of knife products. For instance, a chef's tool has to have long, wide blades. On the other hand, the paring device is much smaller, allowing you to make small cuts with precision. Then, for cutting bread, an implement that has a serrated part is needed.
  • Get the feel of the cutting tools. Before you buy them, pick them up and see how they feel to check its balance. This is important because buying unstable kitchen utensils can injure you while you are cutting or slicing.
  • Make sure you get your money's worth. Ask for a warranty from the dealer. If it does not have one, then move on and find a shop that offers a guarantee. This is because a reputable manufacturer or supplier will provide lifetime servicing schemes for their products, especially if they are considerably pricey.

On a final note, be sure to check with the maker or seller how the knives must be sharpened to ensure they stay in top condition at all times.
